My life as an artist began while I was a seaman aboard the C.S.S Hudson (Canadian Survey Ship) between the years 1977 and 1978.I learned,through practice and some skills from The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design how to paint realistically.This invited portraits of fishing boats and other challenges from nature or puns such as The Highered Hand ,raised on a farm , The Holey Sock and The Blue Nose.

Taken while working as a seaman aboard the C.S.S Hudson (Canadian Survey Ship) in the Labrador Sea .A wave of this magnitude is affectionately called "a Greeny".It began as a black and white photograph and I have recently begun to explore it as a painted image.

The evolution of the boat portrait

When I was painting boats in the late 70's and eighties I couldn't seem to get them "big enough" until there began to be problems with size.They seemed to out dimension the houses and walls of the people who commissioned them so often that I got the point to reduce.Three feet by four feet was reduced to a manageable 22"x28" or 28"x32" and the price hovered somewhere in the four hundred to six hundred range depending on complexity.Every boat is different and if it is a sunk one often little to go on.Most of the fishing boats seen here were photographed in Halifax harbour as I stood on the wharf and the boat went round and round until I thought I had the water that the boat pushes in a nice alignment with everything else.Then I gave the thumbs up and everyone went to work......

Every boat painting begins as stack of detailed photographs to get absolute accuracy.If the boat didn't have all the gear showing how could it work?One skipper when he noticed a light bulb missing on the afterdeck told me not to bother,it didn't work anyway.

The "Friend of the Nose"got their picture taken in real old fashioned black and white and the print was then hand coloured in the W.R.MacAskill tradition.Three prints were made in the 11"x14" format and I somehow got them to sign all three in exchange for one for themselves

Made for the Ottawa Winterlude ice scultpture competition 1991.The three cicles are taken from the stern of schooner BLUENOSE and represents three links of a chain.As for the interpretation of the icon it is unkown to me.Guessing that it is power and possibly Father,son etc as in religious belief or superstition.
